Las Vegas – Engagement Session Sneak Peek

March 9th, 2010

I am in Las Vegas, Nevada this week for the WPPI (wedding and portrait photographers international) convention.  After a day of inspiration from some of the best photographers in the business, I met with Jessica and Michael for a night time engagement session.  They live in Las Vegas, but they will be married at the Stein Eriksen Lodge at Deer Valley this July.  Jessica and Michael met at the Flamingo, so we spent a lot of our time shooting nearby.  I love photographing at night, especially now with the current generation of camera technology, so don’t be shy about scheduling a shoot in the evening!  More pictures from this session will be posted soon.

Anne & Roy’s Wedding – Sliver Lake Lodge, Deer Valley, Utah

September 16th, 2009

The rain cleared up just in time for Anne and Roy’s mountain ceremony at Deer Valley.  Before the ceremony, Anne surprised Roy with a shotgun that has belonged to her family for a long time.  Roy’s gift to Anne was a sweet pair of powder skis that will hopefully come in handy often this winter.  The gifts were exchanged inside to contain the alarming sight of a bride carrying a shotgun.

We dodged the downhill mountain bikers on the way to make the portrait below – it was starting to rain but I managed to get one of my favorite shots in the few seconds we were out in this field.

Catherine and her staff at Deer Valley did a fantastic job coordinating the event.  Everything went smoothly and they were especially hospitable to the other vendors such as myself and the John Flanders Band.  The reception was held in the Silver Lake Lodge, with a cocktail hour on the patio outside.  This was the first event held on a brand new patio outside the Silver Lake Lodge finished in time for this wedding.  Anne and Roy danced to “Ring of Fire”, made famous by Johnny Cash.  Since I am so focused on making pictures, I usually have a hard time remembering what song was used for the first dance, but in this case it was very easy.

The last shot on the right is by my assistant Jen; she climbed up to the balcony to shoot from above only to find the door locked when she climbed back down!  See more pictures in the slideshow – click on the link below to view.

Melissa & Bryce’s Wedding – Seattle, Washington

September 6th, 2009

Melissa and Bryce currently live in Salt Lake City, but had their wedding outside of Seattle, Washington where their roots are planted.  Summer weather in Seattle is usually gorgeous and the weather for the wedding day did not disappoint.

Bryce, his twin brother Tyler and his sister Allison are of native Hawaiian descent; Allison performed a beautiful traditional Hawaiian dance for Bryce and Melissa before the more common first dance and father/daughter dances.

Bryce and Melissa enjoyed a honeymoon close to home on Vancouver Island, BC after the wedding.  They recommended the Maltby Cafe for breakfast which I enjoyed the next morning – a nice big breakfast hits the spot for me the day after all the effort I put in to photographing a wedding.  I spent a few more days in Seattle visiting a friend – we worked in Cafes during the day and enjoyed the food, drink and nightlife of Seattle in the evenings.  I actually got a lot of work done those two days – it must have been that good coffee that Seattle is famous for.

Stacey & Josh’s Wedding – Log Haven and The Market Street Grill, SLC, Utah

August 20th, 2009

wpid650-Mtallman__MG_9619.jpg

Stacey and Josh were married at the Lakeside Meadow at Log Haven, in Mill Creek Canyon east of Salt Lake City, Utah.  They were both were both on cloud nine before the ceremony; I had to show them a picture on my lcd screen to prove to them that it was actually happening!  They were also really excited about their photography.

The meadow looked fantastic in all of it’s green summer glory.  After the ceremony, everyone headed down the canyon to The Market Street Grill in Cottonwood Heights for the reception.

I loved the outdoor patio at the Market Street Grill – it was a perfect spot for a party on this mild summer evening.  Stacey and Josh’s first dance was timed just right for the twilight.  I was lucky to have Erin helping me out as a second shooter.

Anne and Roy’s Engagement Session – 11th Avenue Park, Salt Lake City, Utah

August 11th, 2009

wpid617-Mtallman_20090731_BasEngagement_0037.jpg

I had a very casual engagement shoot with Anne and Roy up at the 11th Avenue Park in the Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City.  Anne and Roy chose this spot because they have spent many evenings playing bocce ball here.

I managed to win one round of bocce, although I found it tricky to play bocce, drink a beer and concentrate on the photographs at the same time.  It was a typical beautiful summer evening overlooking the city – even on the hottest days the air cools off nicely as soon as the sun goes down.

Anne and Roy’s wedding will be at Deer Valley, Utah in September.  I love their honeymoon plans – after the wedding they will head north with no particular itinerary.  Family and friends can see more pictures and order prints here.
